Among the most beautiful and powerful structures in mathematics, the Leech lattice\u2014a lattice in 24-dimensional space\u2014stands as one of the most extraordinary objects in the theory of sphere packing and group theory. Behind its discovery was John Leech, a British mathematician who was both a geometric thinker and a pioneer of early computer science.<\/p>\n
John Leech was born on 21 July 1926 in Weybridge, Surrey, England. He was educated at Trent College in Derbyshire before going on to study at King\u2019s College, University of Cambridge, where he graduated in 1950 as a Wrangler, one of the university\u2019s highest academic distinctions in mathematics.<\/p>\n
After graduating, Leech joined Ferranti in Manchester, one of the pioneering companies behind the world's earliest digital computers. This experience shaped him into a mathematician with a deep understanding of how computers could be applied to mathematical problems\u2014an idea that was still remarkably novel at the time. In 1954, he returned to Cambridge as a researcher at the Mathematical Laboratory. It was during this period that he developed one of the earliest computer programs implementing the Todd\u2013Coxeter algorithm for coset enumeration, a pioneering achievement in applying computers to algebra.<\/p>\n
In 1959, he was appointed as a lecturer at the Computing Laboratory of the University of Glasgow. Then, in 1968, when the University of Stirling was newly established, he became the university's first Professor and Head of the Department of Computing Science.<\/p>\n
Before his greatest discovery, Leech made another significant contribution in 1957: the discovery of the third taxicab number, or Ta(3). It is the smallest number that can be expressed as the sum of the cubes of two distinct positive integers in three different ways. The concept of taxicab numbers became famous through the legendary story of Srinivasa Ramanujan, who immediately recognized the significance of the taxi number 1729 when G. H. Hardy mentioned it.<\/p>\n
Leech\u2019s most famous work came in 1965, when he discovered an exceptionally dense lattice in 24-dimensional space, which later became known as the Leech lattice. The origins of this discovery can be traced back to 1964, when he published a paper on sphere packing in dimensions eight and higher, which included a lattice packing in the 24th dimension. In 1965, he submitted an additional appendix presenting an even denser packing in the same dimension. A few months later, he discovered a packing with twice the density, and the complete paper was eventually published in 1967 under the name of the lattice that bears his own name.<\/p>\n
This lattice is remarkable because it provides the densest known sphere packing in 24-dimensional space (which was later rigorously proven to be the true densest packing in this dimension). It also possesses extraordinarily impressive symmetry properties. Leech himself noticed that the symmetry group of this lattice was likely to be of exceptional interest. Although he did not have sufficient background in group theory to fully prove his conjectures about its structure, he was still able to determine a lower bound for the order of this symmetry group, which was later proven to be exactly its true order.<\/p>\n
Leech\u2019s discovery inspired other mathematicians to pursue extensive further research, especially John Conway, who successfully determined the complete symmetry group of the Leech lattice. This led to the discovery of three simple groups known as the Conway groups, which are part of the sporadic simple groups. These groups played a crucial role in the classification of all finite simple groups, one of the greatest projects in the field of algebra during the 20th century.<\/p>\n
John Leech was a passionate supporter of the preservation of the paddle steamer Waverley, a historic Scottish vessel. He died of a heart attack while aboard the ship during its final cruise of the season on 28 September 1992, while returning from Rothesay to Largs. The flag was lowered to half-mast in his honor as the vessel sailed back toward Glasgow. His death occurred only one month after the passing of Daniel Gorenstein, who oversaw the project to classify finite simple groups. The three sporadic groups discovered by Conway from Leech\u2019s lattice also played an important role in that same classification project.<\/p>\n
The Leech lattice remains one of the most extensively studied mathematical objects to this day, with researchers continuing to explore its applications in coding theory, group theory, and even string theory in theoretical physics. This lattice appears in the structures of certain types of conformal field theories. The story of John Leech is therefore a beautiful example of how pure geometric curiosity can lead to discoveries whose influence extends far beyond the field in which they originated.<\/p>\n
