No mathematician's life story is as tragic and poignant as that of Niels Henrik Abel, the legendary Norwegian mathematician who revolutionized algebra and functional theory, yet spent most of his life in abject poverty and passed away at the young age of 26, just two days before receiving the letter announcing his professorship in Berlin.<\/p>\n
Niels Henrik Abel was born on August 5, 1802, on the island of Finn\u00f8y near Stavanger, Norway, the second child of S\u00f8ren Georg Abel, a Lutheran cleric, and Anne Marie Simonsen. His family moved to the parish of Gjerstad near Ris\u00f8r shortly after his birth. At that time, Norway was still part of Denmark, and the Napoleonic Wars, sweeping across Europe, created significant economic hardship for the region. The Abel family thus faced perpetual poverty.<\/p>\n
In 1815, Abel entered the Cathedral School in Christiania (now Oslo), and in 1818, his mathematical talent was discovered by Bernt Michael Holmboe, the school's new mathematics teacher, who introduced him to classical and contemporary mathematical literature, including the works of Newton, Euler, Lagrange, and Gauss, and provided him with original problems to practice solving. When his father died in 1820, the family's financial situation worsened, but with a small grant from the state, Abel was able to enroll at Christiania University in 1821.<\/p>\n
Abel's most famous work was the first complete proof that general fifth-degree equations cannot be solved by algebraic formulas using nth roots (in radicals). This was a question that had plagued mathematicians for over 250 years, ever since the discovery of formulas for third and fourth-degree equations in the Renaissance, and despite continuous attempts to find similar formulas for fifth-degree equations, none had been successful.<\/p>\n
Although the Italian mathematician Paolo Ruffini had previously proposed a similar proof, his work had loopholes and was not fully accepted. Abel provided the most rigorous and complete proof, leading to the result now known as the Abel-Ruffini theorem. This was a crucial step that paved the way for the later development of \u00c9variste Galois's group theory.<\/p>\n
In addition to the Abel-Ruffini theorem, Abel was also a major pioneer of the theory of elliptic functions, a field that studies complex functions with doubly periodic properties. His research in this area was so profound and advanced that even Carl Friedrich Gauss, one of the greatest mathematicians in history, praised it. Abel's work in this field also laid an important foundation for what would later be called Abelian functions, as well as many other concepts named after him, including the Abelian group, which is one of the most fundamental concepts in modern abstract algebra.<\/p>\n
During his travels across Europe between 1825 and 1827, Abel met many leading mathematicians and had the opportunity to publish his work in the Journal f\u00fcr die reine und angewandte Mathematik, founded by August Leopold Crelle, which became an important platform that brought his work to wider recognition.<\/p>\n
Although Abel's work gained increasing recognition in European academic circles, he himself never held a stable academic position during his lifetime. He lived in poverty and his health deteriorated steadily due to tuberculosis, a disease he had suffered from since childhood. In early 1829, his condition worsened significantly, forcing him to travel to Froland, Norway, for treatment.<\/p>\n
The saddest part of Abel's life was that just two days after his death on April 6, 1829, at the age of 26, a letter arrived from August Leopold Crelle, informing him of his appointment as a professor at the University of Berlin\u2014a position he had dreamed of his entire life to escape poverty. Unfortunately, this good news arrived a little too late.<\/p>\n
Although Niels Henrik Abel lived for only 26 years, his work deeply shaped modern mathematics, including algebra, analysis, and function theory, making him a pioneer in many fields. To honor him, Norway founded the Abel Prize in 2002 on his bicentennial, awarding top mathematicians annually as a top global math honor akin to the Nobel Prize.<\/p>\n
The life story of Niels Henrik Abel is therefore both an inspiration and a painful lesson, demonstrating that even great intellectual genius sometimes cannot protect its possessor from the cruelty of fate and time.<\/p>\n
