There are few stories that reflect a scholar's dedication as clearly as the final moments of W\u0142adys\u0142aw Orlicz, a Polish mathematician and a pioneer in functional analysis. He passed away on August 9, 1990, in the city of Pozna\u0144, Poland, while sitting and proofreading his last research paper, which had just been accepted for publication in the journal Mathematica Japonica, at the age of 87.<\/p>\n
Orlicz was born on May 24, 1903, in the village of Okocim near the city of Krak\u00f3w, in a family with five sons. His father passed away when he was only four years old, leaving the family to face hardships. In 1919, the family moved to the city of Lw\u00f3w (now Lviv in Ukraine), where he completed his secondary education and went on to study mathematics at Jan Kazimierz University, under influential professors such as Stefan Banach, Hugo Steinhaus, and Antoni \u0141omnicki. He obtained his doctorate in 1928 under the official supervision of Eustachy \u017byli\u0144ski, but his actual advisor was Hugo Steinhaus.<\/p>\n
It was in the city of Lw\u00f3w that Orlicz joined the famous discussion circle at the Kawiarnia Szkocka (Scottish Caf\u00e9) along with leading mathematicians of the era, including Stefan Banach, Hugo Steinhaus, Stanis\u0142aw Ulam, Stanis\u0142aw Mazur, Mark Kac, and Juliusz Schauder, in an intense academic atmosphere that fostered the creation of the \u201cLw\u00f3w School of Mathematics,\u201d which gained worldwide fame.<\/p>\n
The work that made Orlicz's name most recognized is the Orlicz spaces, which expand the concept of the well-known Lp spaces in functional analysis to encompass a broader class of functions using convex functions instead of the power p. This concept appeared officially for the first time in 1932 through the article '\u00dcber eine gewisse Klasse von R\u00e4umen vom Typus B' and has become an important tool widely used by mathematicians worldwide in the study of partial differential equations (PDEs), probability theory, and harmonic analysis up to the present. In addition, he is also the owner of the Orlicz\u2013Pettis theorem, which is another significant result in functional analysis. Throughout his career, he published a total of 171 research papers, with approximately half of them being collaborations with other researchers.<\/p>\n
In the later years of his life, Orlicz turned his attention to recording the history of the Polish mathematics community he had once been a part of. He began collecting information about the mathematicians of Lw\u00f3w from the late 1970s, intending to write a complete historical book on this mathematical school. However, he was only able to publish two articles and short biographies of contemporaries such as Stefan Banach, Stefan Kaczmarz, Antoni \u0141omnicki, Stanis\u0142aw Mazur, and Juliusz Schauder before this ambitious project remained unfinished.<\/p>\n
W\u0142adys\u0142aw Orlicz passed away at 10:30 PM on August 9, 1990, in the city of Pozna\u0144 while proofreading his last research article that had been accepted for publication in the journal Mathematica Japonica. This reflects a scholar who worked with mathematics until his last breath. In his honor, several memorial academic meetings were held, including the Orlicz Memorial Conference at the University of Mississippi in 1991. His legacy in the form of Orlicz spaces remains a crucial tool that mathematicians around the world continue to use to this day.<\/p>\n
