In the American mathematics community in the mid-20th century, there was a mathematician of Norwegian descent who played an important role both as a researcher in abstract algebra and graph theory, as well as being known as a writer of mathematics history books. That was \u00d8ystein Ore, who passed away on August 13, 1968, in Oslo, Norway, just one day before he was to give a lecture at a mathematics conference in Oslo.<\/p>\n
Ore was born on October 7, 1899, in Oslo, Norway. He studied mathematics at the University of Oslo and received his doctorate in 1924 for research in algebraic number theory. After that, he traveled to study and conduct research in several countries, including Germany and France, before moving to the United States in 1927 to join Yale University, where he worked throughout his career and held the position of Sterling Professor of Mathematics, which is one of the highest honorary positions at Yale University.<\/p>\n
In the early stages of his career, Ore made significant contributions to abstract algebra, particularly in ring theory. He was one of the pioneers in the study of non-commutative rings and developed the concept of the field of quotients of non-commutative rings, which later became known as the 'Ore extension' and 'Ore condition,' essential tools still used in modern algebra. In addition, he also contributed to lattice theory, having a significant influence on this field.<\/p>\n
In the later part of his career, Ore turned his attention seriously to graph theory and became one of the key pioneers in this field at a time when graph theory was not as widespread as it is today. His most famous work is \"Ore's theorem\" (Ore's theorem or Ore condition), which provides a sufficient condition to determine whether a graph has a Hamiltonian cycle. That is, if the sum of the degrees of any two non-adjacent vertices is greater than or equal to the total number of vertices in the graph, the graph will always have a Hamiltonian cycle. This theorem remains one of the classic results taught in introductory graph theory courses to this day.<\/p>\n
Apart from his research, Ores is also known as a writer with outstanding ability to convey history and mathematical concepts in an easily understandable way. He has written widely popular biographical books about mathematicians, such as books about Niels Henrik Abel and Girolamo Cardano, as well as textbooks on graph theory and number theory that are still referenced in the academic community.<\/p>\n
Ore left an academic legacy covering abstract algebra, graph theory, and the dissemination of mathematical knowledge to the public, which continues to influence the field of mathematics to this day.<\/p>\n
