Sir Thomas Muir was born on August 25, 1844, in Stonebyres, Clyde Falls, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He grew up in a small town called Biggar, where his father worked as a shoemaker. Muir was a mathematician who devoted his life to the study of determinants more deeply than anyone else, eventually becoming an internationally recognized expert.<\/p>\n
In his childhood, Muir attended Wishaw School, where his favorite subject was Greek. When he went on to study at the University of Glasgow between 1863-1868, he intended to continue studying classical subjects. However, fate took a turn when Lord Kelvin, his professor at the University of Glasgow at the time, noticed Muir's outstanding mathematical ability and persuaded him to switch to studying mathematics instead. Muir remembered Kelvin's influence throughout his life and later recounted that he had seen the first phonograph through a demonstration by Kelvin himself.<\/p>\n
After graduation, Muir obtained a position as a tutor at the University of St Andrews in 1868 before traveling to Europe to meet several leading mathematicians.<\/p>\n
The work that brought Muir the most fame was his profound expertise in the theory of determinants. He devoted most of his life to collecting, organizing, and writing a comprehensive history of this field. His most important work is The Theory of Determinants in the Historical Order of Development, which was published in as many as five large volumes, covering the development of determinant theory from its beginnings in the history of mathematics to his own era. This work is considered the most comprehensive and valuable reference in the field and continues to be an important source for historians of mathematics and linear algebraists to this day. Additionally, Muir was the one who named the 'Wronskian' in 1882 in honor of J\u00f3zef Hoene-Wronski, who invented this type of determinant in the context of differential equations.<\/p>\n
Throughout his career, Meier published hundreds of research articles on determinants and related topics, demonstrating meticulousness and rare expertise in this field. His dedication earned him recognition as one of the greatest experts on determinants in the history of mathematics.<\/p>\n
Although he had outstanding academic work, Meer's main career path took him far from the mathematics research room. In 1892, he was contacted by Cecil Rhodes, a famous South African politician and businessman, to serve as the Superintendent General of Education of South Africa. The famous story goes that when Rhodes met Meer in an interview, he refused to waste time reading any further letters of recommendation, saying only, 'I have seen the person.'<\/p>\n
Myer worked in this position for almost a quarter of a century until he retired in 1915. During this period, he played a very important role in the development of South Africa's education system, both by introducing science and craft curricula into schools and by establishing several teacher training colleges. This educational administration work required great strength and dedication, but Myer performed it excellently, earning widespread recognition on his 89th birthday.<\/p>\n
Meir received numerous honors throughout his life. He was elected as a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and in 1900 he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in London. He was appointed as a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 1901 and was knighted by King George V in 1915.<\/p>\n
Even after retiring from educational administration, Meir continued to lead an astonishingly lively life in his later years. He played tennis from age 60 to 84, and once played a four-set tennis match with his grandchildren at the age of 84. When he finally had to put down the tennis racket, he turned to exercising by sawing wood or walking among the flowers and pine trees he loved. Meir was also a musician with profound knowledge, had refined literary and philosophical tastes, and once had a fine English literature library before his collection of mathematics books took its place.<\/p>\n
Sir Thomas Muir passed away on March 21, 1934, in Rondebosch near Cape Town, South Africa, at the age of 89, just a few months after attending his last opera performance in August 1933. His academic legacy, including five volumes of historical determinants and his educational work in South Africa, remains remembered and valuable to this day. It is a testament that a life devoted to deep knowledge can have an impact both in the academic world and in practical life.<\/p>\n
