Helmut Hasse was born on August 25, 1898, in Kassel, Hesse-Nassau, German Empire, as the son of judge Paul Reinhard Hasse. His mother was born in Milwaukee, United States. Hasse became one of the most important mathematicians of the 20th century, with roles encompassing research, dissemination of mathematical knowledge, teaching, and academic journal editing.<\/p>\n
After serving in the navy during World War I, Hasse studied at the University of G\u00f6ttingen before moving to continue his studies at the University of Marburg under the supervision of Kurt Hensel, a pioneer of p-adic number theory. In 1921, Hasse wrote a thesis that contained what is now known as the Hasse-Minkowski theorem concerning quadratic forms over number fields. After graduation, he held positions at the University of Kiel, the University of Halle, and the University of Marburg, respectively.<\/p>\n
Hasse's most famous work is the Hasse principle, also called the \"local-global principle.\" This concept states that certain types of Diophantine equations have rational solutions if and only if they have solutions in every local extension of the rational numbers, both real numbers and p-adic numbers for every prime p.
