Johann Heinrich Lambert was born on August 26, 1728, in the city of Mulhouse, the Republic of Mulhouse, which at that time was an ally of the Swiss Confederation (now in the Alsace region of France). He was born into a Huguenot family who had fled religious persecution from the Lorraine region. His father was a tailor, as was his grandfather. Lambert is a prominent example of a polymath who made significant contributions in mathematics, physics, astronomy, and philosophy.<\/p>\n
Lambert left school at the age of only 12 to help in his father's tailoring shop, but he never stopped studying on his own in his free time. At the age of 17, he took a position as a secretary for a newspaper publishing house near Basel, Switzerland, while also working as a private tutor. At the age of 20, he became a tutor for the three sons of Count Peter von Salis in Chur, Switzerland, a position he held for 10 years. During this time, he had access to the family's large library and had the opportunity to study mathematics and science deeply. In 1764, Emperor Frederick II of Prussia appointed him as a royal professor at the Berlin Academy of Sciences.<\/p>\n
Lambert's most famous work is being the first person to provide a rigorous proof that the value of pi (\u03c0) is an irrational number in 1761, which means that pi cannot be expressed as a fraction of two integers. This discovery was a major milestone in the history of mathematics because it ended a question that mathematicians had wondered about for many centuries regarding the nature of this important constant. Lambert's method of proof relied on representing the tangent function as a continued fraction, a technique that demonstrated his profound creativity. This work is still regarded as one of the most important results in the theory of irrational numbers.<\/p>\n
Even more remarkably, Lambert was also a pioneer of key ideas regarding non-Euclidean geometry, even before the era of Gauss, Bolyai, and Lobachevsky. He studied Euclid's parallel postulate in depth and was among the first mathematicians to consider the possibility of geometries different from the familiar Euclidean geometry. He also studied the concept of geometry on an imaginary sphere, which anticipated what would later become hyperbolic geometry.<\/p>\n

In physics, he was a pioneer in optics and made important contributions through his work Photometria in 1760, which laid an important foundation for the science of measuring light intensity. His name is used as the unit of light intensity called the 'lambert,' and the concept of 'Lambert\u2019s cosine law' is still used in the field of optics today.<\/p>\n
In the field of cartography and map-making, he invented the Lambert conformal conic projection in 1772, which is still widely used in weather forecasting models to this day. In the field of astronomy, he proposed a pioneering idea that the Milky Way might be just one of many systems of stars that make up the universe, an idea that is close to the modern understanding of galaxies. Additionally, he studied problems in orbital dynamics, which are now known as 'Lambert's problem,' and remain a fundamental basis of modern space orbital mechanics.<\/p>\n
Lambert is known among his colleagues as a thinker with relentless creative initiative. Although he did not receive much formal education, his dedication to self-learning enabled him to produce influential work in a variety of fields, which is rare to find among scholars of his time.<\/p>\n
Johann Heinrich Lambert died on September 25, 1777, in Berlin at the age of 49 from complications related to the respiratory system.
