Among the mathematicians of the 20th century, there is a name that is widely recognized as one of the most influential and prolific mathematicians: Israel Moiseevich Gelfand, a Russian mathematician, born on September 2, 1913, in a small town called Okny near the city of Odessa, Russian Empire (now in the Odessa region, Ukraine).<\/p>\n
Klevand grew up in a family where his father was a mill manager, which led to him being classified as a 'child of the petty bourgeoisie' from the perspective of the Soviet authorities at the time. He was expelled from school in the 9th grade for this class-related reason, which caused him to mostly study mathematics on his own.<\/p>\n
At the age of 16, in 1930, Gelfand traveled to Moscow to live with relatives and supported himself with small jobs, including working as a guard at the Lenin Library, which became a turning point in his life. There, he had the opportunity to read advanced mathematics textbooks and practice solving problems on his own. One day, while he was reading advanced mathematics books in the library, a professor from Moscow State University noticed his talent and gave him a mathematics problem to solve, before Gelfand presented the solution the next time. This event opened the door for him to enter the academic field officially, even though he had never completed high school.<\/p>\n
In 1932, Gelfand was admitted as a research student under the supervision of Andrey Kolmogorov, a legendary mathematician at Moscow State University.<\/p>\n
What makes Gelfand especially remarkable is the astonishing breadth of his work, spanning from group theory, integral geometry, and representation theory to functional analysis. One of his most famous works is the Gelfand representation, a theory that connects Banach algebras with spaces of continuous functions. This concept became a fundamental tool linking abstract algebra with functional analysis in a profound way and was a major step leading to the renowned Gelfand\u2013Naimark theorem.<\/p>\n
In addition, Gelfand also made significant contributions in mathematical physics, particularly in the application of representation theory and functional analysis in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory. His work on the Gelfand\u2013Levitan\u2013Marchenko integral equation also plays an important role in inverse scattering theory, which is a key tool in solving certain types of nonlinear differential equations.<\/p>\n
Apart from his research work, Gelfand was also widely known for Gelfand\u2019s Seminar, which he held every Monday at Moscow State University for nearly 50 years. The seminar became a phenomenon with a unique character, attracting about 100 mathematicians each time. It started at seven in the evening and often continued past midnight without any breaks. Edward Frenkel, a mathematician who attended this seminar as a graduate student, described Gelfand as 'a sage with a keen ear for the beauty of mathematics,' someone who could see the most interesting and promising directions and help the audience feel the unity of mathematics. This seminar produced many generations of skilled mathematicians, including renowned mathematicians such as Andrei Zelevinsky and Endre Szemer\u00e9di.<\/p>\n
With his diverse and influential work, Gelfand received numerous accolades and awards throughout his life. He was awarded the Wolf Prize in Mathematics twice, in 1978 and 1994, an honor received by only a few mathematicians in the world. In addition, he was awarded the Order of Lenin three times, was elected as a foreign member of the United States National Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society of London, and also received the Kyoto Prize in 1989 and the Steele Prize from the American Mathematical Society in 2005.<\/p>\n
In the later stage of his career, Gelfand moved to the United States, spending one year at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before moving to Rutgers University in New Jersey, where he spent the remainder of his career. He passed away on October 5, 2009, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, at the age of 96.<\/p>\n
Israel Gelfand was widely recognized as one of the most influential mathematicians of the 20th century, not only because of his diverse and profound research work but also because of his role as a teacher and organizer of mathematical education, inspiring and nurturing generations of mathematicians to appreciate the beauty and unity of mathematics in all its branches.<\/p>\n
