Felix Earl Browder: A genius in nonlinear functional analysis from an extreme political family
Felix Earl Browder was an American mathematician and one of the most influential experts in nonlinear functional analysis of his time, a recipient of the National Medal of Science in 1999, and a former president of the American Mathematical Society. But behind this outstanding academic achievement lies an extraordinary childhood story, from a family with a father who was a leader of the American Communist Party.
A son born in Moscow amid political conflict
Felix Earl Browder was born on July 31, 1927, in Moscow, Soviet Union. His father, Earl Browder, an American from Wichita, Kansas, traveled to the Soviet Union in 1927 and later became the leader of the Communist Party USA, including running for the U.S. presidency twice in 1936 and 1940. His mother, Raissa Berkmann, was a Russian Jewish lawyer from St. Petersburg whom his father met and married while residing in the Soviet Union.
Felix was the eldest of three sons, with his two younger brothers, William Browder and Andrew Browder, also becoming renowned mathematicians. This made the Browder family another example of a family producing three top-level mathematicians simultaneously. In his childhood, Felix showed remarkable intellectual abilities. It is said that he read at least one book a day from the age of just five, and throughout his life, he accumulated a personal library of more than 35,000 books, each of which he had read at least once.
A remarkably fast educational path
Browder studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) before pursuing graduate studies at Princeton University under the supervision of Solomon Lefschetz, a renowned mathematician in topology, and Witold Hurewicz. He earned his Ph.D. in 1948 with a dissertation titled “The Topological Fixed Point Theory and Its Applications in Functional Analysis,” which laid the foundation for his lifelong interest in topological fixed point theory.
After graduation, he was appointed as a C. L. E. Moore Instructor at MIT in 1948 before moving to become a professor at Boston University in 1951. After that, his career progressed rapidly, holding professorships at Yale University, University of Chicago, and Rutgers University, respectively.
Leader in Nonlinear Functional Analysis
Browder is acclaimed as the most important figure in the field of nonlinear functional analysis since the early 1950s. His research covers the theory of linear elliptic partial differential equations, which he and his students developed far beyond the techniques initially pioneered by Russian analysts in proving completeness theorems for eigenfunctions of non-self-adjoint elliptic operators. His work on these fundamental issues remains clear and widely recognized to this day.
His most famous works are the Browder fixed-point theorem and the Browder–Minty theorem, which relate to monotone operators. He proved an important general theorem that a continuous coercive monotone operator from a reflexive Banach space to its dual space must be surjective. These works have become fundamental tools in the study of nonlinear differential equations widely used in applied mathematics and mathematical physics.
National academic leader
In addition to his research, Browder also played an important role in academic administration. He served as president of the American Mathematical Society until 2000 and played a significant role in shaping the science policy direction of the United States. In 1999, he received the National Medal of Science, the highest scientific honor in the United States, in recognition of his lifetime achievements in laying the foundations of the field of nonlinear functional analysis.
He has also served as a thesis advisor to many renowned mathematicians, including Richard Beals, Thomas K. Donaldson, and Roger D. Nussbaum, all of whom have inherited and furthered his research in nonlinear functional analysis.
Diverse families and heritage
Browder married Eva Tislowitz, an Austrian-Jewish refugee from the genocide, in 1949. The couple shared 66 years of married life and had two sons: Thomas Browder, a physicist specializing in subatomic particles, and Bill Browder, who later became the CEO of Hermitage Capital Management and played a significant role in international finance.
Felix Earl Browder passed away on December 10, 2016, in Princeton, New Jersey, at the age of 89, leaving behind a profound academic legacy in the field of nonlinear functional analysis and a unique life story, from being born in Moscow amid global political turmoil to becoming one of the most influential American mathematicians of the 20th century.
