July 15 marks the birthday of Stephen Smale, an American mathematician who played a pivotal role in several fields of modern mathematics, including topology, dynamical systems, and mathematical economics.

Grew up on a small farm in Michigan.

Smale was born in Flint, Michigan, USA, and grew up in a rural area near the city. He pursued his studies at the University of Michigan from his undergraduate years through to his doctorate, earning his Ph.D. in 1956.

A work that transformed the field of topology.

In 1958, while a faculty member at the University of Chicago, Smale caused a sensation in the mathematical community by proving that a sphere could theoretically be "turned inside out" without tearing or creasing—a result that was highly counterintuitive.

However, his most renowned achievement was successfully proving the Generalized Poincaré Conjecture for dimensions of five or higher in 1961. This marked a significant breakthrough in the field of topology, as it demonstrated that, in certain respects, higher-dimensional spaces are actually "easier to understand" than the three-dimensional space with which we are familiar. This work earned him the Fields Medal in 1966 at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Moscow.

It is interesting to note that the Poincaré conjecture for the 3-dimensional case—the original and most familiar version—was not proven until 2002–2003 by the Russian mathematician Grigori Perelman.

From topology to chaos theory.

After pioneering work in topology, Smale turned his attention to dynamical systems; in 1960, he devised the "Smale horseshoe," a mathematical model that became a key prototype for chaos theory and subsequently exerted a profound influence on research in the field.

A life intertwined with politics

Beyond his academic work, Smale was also politically active; he participated in the anti-Vietnam War and free speech movements. A major controversy arose in 1966 when he traveled to Moscow to receive the Fields Medal and held a press conference criticizing both the U.S. stance on the Vietnam War and the actions of the Soviet Union.

Honor in one's twilight years

Smale spent over three decades as a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, before retiring and taking up a professorship at the City University of Hong Kong. In 2007, he received the Wolf Prize in Mathematics, making him one of only twelve mathematicians to have won both the Fields Medal and the Wolf Prize.

Furthermore, in 1998, Smale compiled a list of 18 problems—known as "Smale’s Problems"—that he considered crucial for the mathematical community to address in the 21st century; these continue to inspire mathematicians to this day.


Every year on July 15, the name Stephen Smale serves as a reminder that mathematical progress sometimes requires the courage to question and challenge what is generally considered “impossible.”
